Memes

a meme by jam, a photo manipulation of a screencap from the movie Chinatown. The caption reads: Forget it Jake, it's solarpunk.

What is the proper tone for Solarpunk?

If you think about Cyberpunk, the prevailing tone is probably sarcasm. (Or possibly grimdark). That makes a lot of sense when you think of the Gen X mentality that spawned it. Carrying this tone forward into Solarpunk wouldn't be a good match.

I think more often of Dadaism. If you're not familiar with that art movement, here's a brief primer on youtube. It's an intentionally-absurdist style of art that was spawned in reaction to the horror of World War I and the 1918 plague. This movement sought to challenge what art is, and what art could be.

All of this reminded me of the dry nihilism that Gen Z has been forming and also of... memes. This is a great video by Zenya Hendricks that does a deep dive comparing memes to Dadaism. I think it's really important to hear from Gen Z about this, but I was actually a bit surprised that there weren't a lot of other academic articles that I could find about it. This other one about "Ignorant Tattoos" by struthless is also very interesting and touches on a lot of adjacent themes. Memes have always fascinated me, and the whole "this is not art" vibe that causes it to be ignored by art theorists. It also really reminds me of Dadaism.

But the big difference... the big big difference... is that memes are a ground-up movement. They're a style of communication from people who aren't trying to make art. And that makes it even MORE perfect for Solarpunk as a vibe.

Memes I have created

To further explore this concept and its relationship to Solarpunk, I tried to capture some of the ways I feel about it in memes. These were originally collected in a small black and white zine that I printed for VanCAF 2022.
A photo of the small quarter-size green zine that jam printed in 2021.

Anakin and Padme meme: Anakin: We must return to a hyper-local existence in tune with nature. Padme: Then things will be chill and easy, right? Anakain (stares) Padme: Then things will be chill and easy, right?

Swole doge(s) vs Cheems meme: Cheems doge on the right dressed as a cyberpunk character. Cheems: I'm a wone woof owo a wonely woner, on a woney woad. Several swole dogs on the right hand side with many varying physical characteristics: All my homies love an ensemble cast

A manipulated screencapture from League of their Own starring Tom Hanks. From the crying in baseball scene. Tom Hanks and Bitty Schram are gender-swapped. The caption reads THERE'RE NO GENDER RULES IN SOLARPUNK.

Galaxy Brain meme. Dead brain: cryptocurrency. Lit up brain: UBI. Bright brain: community-level systems of care and exchange. Glowing brain: All life has inherrent value that doesn't need to be earned. Galaxy brain: abolish the concept of discretized value, embrace systemic oneness.

Totally Twisted tarot meme. Me, totally twisted, coming home with a load of solar panels. Me, waking up the next day in a room full of solar panels.

Meme captioned version of one of jam's art pieces, featuring hydroponics. Caption: Yeah I'm into NFTs: I use the nutrient film technique in the aquaponic system of my solar passivhaus.

Anime girl version of the drake meme. Refuse: (images of sterotypical current solarpunk aesthetic) it's capitalism but there are plants now. Accept: (images of gardening, solar trikes, overgrown payphones, recycle or die) liberate a smart tractor with an old gameboy, biohack an invasive mussel to generate free insulin.

Memes I found "in the wild"

Here are some other memes I've discovered in my internet wanderings that I feel align well with Solarpunk.

Captioned image of a person spraying WD-40 on a giant mechanism. Caption: (mechanism) Climate Change. (WD-40) What if buildings but with trees on them.

A caption made to look like a screenshot of Legend of Zelda Link to the Past. Caption: Absolutely nothing should be sold for profit if its absence could kill you. Any modern system where people still die from the lack of these resources should be dismantled.
